S.S. Mohawk

Saturday, June 22nd

SS Mohawk

The Mohawk was given its name after a previous ship of the same name belonging to the same company burned and sank in Delaware Bay in 1925. Another Mohawk is sunk outside the mouth of New York harbor. Thus there are plenty of Mohawk wrecks in our area. This does not seem to be a lucky name.

Neither was the parent shipping company, Atlantic, Gulf & West Indies Steamship Lines, very lucky; the previous year, in an incident that is far more well-known than the sinking of the Mohawk, the Morro Castle caught fire and grounded in the surf off Asbury Park, a total loss. ( the hulk was eventually towed to a Baltimore wrecker’s yard. ) then, just weeks before the Mohawk was lost, the company’s Havana grounded on a reef, and the Mohawk was transferred to fill in for the damaged vessel on the New York – Havana – Vera Cruz (Mexico) run. Coincidentally, the Clyde Line also owned the Delaware, sunk nearby some 37 years earlier.

Stolt Dagali

Saturday, July 20th

stolt_dagali_1

The collision took place just forward of the aft superstructure of the tanker, and the powerful Shalom cut the stern off like a hot knife through butter. The sheer weight of the engines of the tanker pulled the ship apart, and the aft superstructure disappeared within seconds. It settled to a depth of 130-ft down on the sandy bottom of the continental shelf. The forward 2/3rds of the tanker drifted ahead with its captain and watch Standers staring through the white fog in awe. It took just moments for them to realize that 18 fellow crewmen and a stewardess had gone to their deaths as stern of the ship plunged downward. Death was not likely prolonged as the aft 1/3rd of the ship was the site of much of the crew’s sleeping quarters, and it just disappeared. There was not even a cry for help, just the magnified sound of a thousand automobiles wrecking on a freeway in the middle of the night. For those that witnessed the tragedy, the sound would never be forgotten, nor the sight of the floating but heavily listing 2/3rds of the tanker as light dawned and the fog dissipated.

Pinta

Saturday, August 17th

How two ships in the age of radar and on a clear day could collide on the open sea is a mystery. Nonetheless, we now have the Pinta as one of the best dive sites in New Jersey. This relatively small vessel lies on its port side on a clean sandy bottom. It is still quite recognizable as a ship, and is the perfect size for sightseeing – you can swim from end to end several times on a single tank of air. It also makes a good multi-level training dive.

Departure Time: 7:00 am Dive Boat: Gypsy Blood, $120.00 per Diver.

Maurice Tracy

Saturday, September 21st

Victim of one of the many wartime collisions, the Maurice Tracy is today a scattered debris field of flattened hull plates and larger pieces, although not as thoroughly demolished as many other wartime wrecks.

The stern of the Tracy is the highest part, with the curve of the fantail still evident. Referring to the picture above, the pilot house is still partially intact, and almost upright, as is the platform for the deck gun, at the extreme rear of the vessel. Between the deck gun and the pilot house is a great deal of semi-collapsed wreckage, with many spaces large enough to squeeze inside of, and inhabited by Blackfish and lobsters. Just aft of the pilot house are the twin boilers, side by side and very large, with open ends.

Departure Time: 7:00 am Dive Boat: Gypsy Blood, $120.00 per Diver.

Algol

Saturday, October 19th

nj03sr_uss_algol_segars

The Algol was a Navy transport ship that had a long and successful service career from World War II to the Cuban Missile Crisis.  After lying in the mothball fleet at Norfolk for some twenty years, she was transferred to the New Jersey Artificial Reef Program and sunk with little fanfare, unlike the much-hyped ( and not much bigger ) Spiegel Grove in Florida.

Departure Time: 7:00 am Dive Boat: Gypsy Blood, $120.00 per Diver.
