General: In the past, many sport divers were unnecessarily intimidated by technical diving, and thus were reluctant to explore this advanced aspect of recreational diving. Some have been puzzled by the apparently alien gear. Others might have had a concern about venturing beyond the traditional sport diving boundaries. Most recreational divers really don’t understand what technical diving is all about; sadly, since it is rarely mentioned in recreational diver training programs, many don’t know that it even exists. Previously there was no single resource, geared towards the sport diver, which provided an appropriate overview of technical diving issues.
This new TDI course addresses these issues. It introduces the recreational diver to the concepts of technical diving by providing a broad overview of theory, tools and techniques. It starts with a comparison of recreational versus technical sport diving, outlining both similarities and differences. Next it examines equipment options and considerations. Then it reviews the physiological effects of diving, and demonstrates how a diver may better manage these effects with various breathing gases – air, nitrox, and trimix. Finally, it explores specific technical activities including staged decompression, wreck penetration and cave diving, rebreathers, and solo diving. In addition, effective management of the diver’s gas supply, as well as contingency planning to deal with foreseeable in-water emergencies, are addressed during this program.
Yes, upon completion of this course you’ll receive a TDI certification card. However this course will not, by itself, make you a full-fledged technical diver. Instead it will provide a thorough understanding of what technical diving is all about, and will help you make informed decisions about your own training path. Even if you never venture further into this advanced aspect of the sport, you’ll gain a wealth of knowledge from this program that can be applied to your recreational diving activities.
